Over the past several months, I’ve been lucky enough to talk to Moms from coast to coast. My one takeaway? Despite all the differences – money, education, lifestyle, full time at home moms or ones that work outside the home – there is one thing they all had in common. They want their kids to grow to become their best selves.
I met them all through presentations I was giving on bullying prevention and leadership. The mere fact they were there was an indication that they were open to learning new things and sharing their own personal tips with other moms.

I want to thank each and every one of them for teaching me a thing or two. Here’s a few of my own light bulb moments:
- Moms are the experts on their own kids. But they’re willing to listen to other experts when they need help with issues that inevitably crop up.
- They are the “human shock absorbers” when things go wrong or when transitions are going to be challenging. (Hats off to you, Military Moms. I spoke to one Army Mom who was in the middle of moving her 4 kids. It was April. The end of the school year. She was calm, focused and determined to make it as smooth as possible.)
- Moms are willing to be honest and open about their own strengths and weaknesses. They not only want their kids to become their best selves but they want to improve and grow, too.
- Just like kids, Moms depend on a sense of humor to get them through some of the not so funny moments. (The Moms I met in Malibu took themselves lightly but they took their roles as Moms seriously.)
- Moms want their kids to feel respected and to respect others. They know the most effective way to do this, is to model it.
Happy Mother’s Day, Superheroes. And thanks for inspiring me.
